Lancaster Pennsylvania is fortunate to have had Dr. Robert A. Matlin as a member of our community for over 50 years. Upon arriving in 1976, he quickly became a leader in the local Jewish Community, holding various leadership roles with the former Lancaster Jewish Federation and Lancaster JCC, JCAL and Temple Beth El. He organized several mission trips to Israel in coordination with the Federation/UJA Maimonides Society and brought the Lancaster Jewish Federation (now JCAL) under the umbrella of the JFNA network. In addition to leadership in the local Jewish community, he is also a past president of the Lancaster chapter of the American Lung Association. He has been an exemplar of volunteerism, leadership, and philanthropy; a true mensch in our midst.
Professionally, Bob is a retired pulmonologist affiliated with St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was the medical director of the respiratory therapy program, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital, and the Lebanon VA Medical Center. He received his medical degree from State University of New York Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine and continued with residency and fellowship programs at St. Vincent’s Hospital at NYU and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Bob had been in practice in Lancaster for more years than he wants us to say.
Beyond his family, Bob is most proud of his many years as an educator. From new physicians in residency to students in health-related fields at Thaddeus Stevens College and fellow members of Temple Beth El, Bob is an educator. Combining his knowledge of medicine and Judaism, he taught physicians how to be better physicians and Jews the intricacies of Jewish medical and bio ethics.
Bob and Michele have been married 58 years and share two daughters and their husbands along with five grandchildren here in Lancaster and in Virginia.
